The Great Cities Tour – 10 Days

This Tour will give the best of the two major cities of Portugal, both steeped in history, yet vibrant and modern at the same time.

Porto dramatically perched at the mouth of the Rio Douro has a wonderful atmosphere. It is packed with ancient and great monuments rubbing shoulders with everyday Portuguese life.

The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of historic buildings and outstanding monuments as well as quaint medieval streets.

Highlights of this wonderful city include the formidable Porto cathedral, the Torre dos Clérigos and the famed Port wine lodges that dominate the hillside of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Porto offers a compelling synthesis of ancient and contemporary attractions and it is a delight to stroll gently through its diverse landscape.

Lisbon is so many special things; it’s the sound of vintage trams rambling up and down cobblestone streets, a medley of heartfelt Fado songs, an open-air gallery of historic heritage, a haven for free spirits, a surprise for fashionable shoppers and Portugal’s ‘coolest’ city.

Steeped in history and culture, this enchanting ‘city of light’ boasts a natural luminosity and effortless charm unlike any other in the country and has become a popular European destination for its exciting diversity, beautiful sites and enviable, sunny climate.

Marking every spot in the city with a touch of tradition, Lisbon is all about preserving the beauty of ‘old’, whether embodied by friendly flower sellers and chestnut vendors on the streets, its majestic azulejo adorned architecture and typical pastry shops or charming, tavern-inspired restaurants.
Each day breakfast will be taken in the Hotel before leaving for the day’s program.
We will usually leave the Hotel between 9.00 am and 9.30am.
On our return to the Hotel each day we will have time to relax and change before dinner which is usually taken at 7.30pm.
Each evening the guide will give a preview of the next day’s program.
Day’s program is subject to alteration due to weather and local conditions.

Arrival in Porto
We’ll meet you at the airport and bring you to the Hotel.
Short introductory walk around the Hotel streets. Free time until evening meeting and dinner.

Orientation Walk, River Trip – Port Lodge Visit
We begin with a wonderful walk seeing the most remarkable buildings of Porto.
A river trip will then allow us to enjoy the spectacular view from the river and a visit to a Port Lodge to get to know the history of this world famous wine and taste it, of course.

Castelo do Queijo Walk
The Fort of S. Francisco Xavier was built in the 17th century to protect the coast from the pirates of North Africa, it is located on a cheese-shaped rocky hill, thus the name Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle).
Our walk starts here and shadows the restless Atlantic all the way to the river Douro estuary.

Guimarães Walk
Guimarães is a charming and historic city and is regarded as the birth place of Portugal. Its extensive history is reflected in the variety of national monuments and historic buildings found within the city.
It is a World Heritage Site, and its charming medieval centre is a warren of labyrinthine lanes and picturesque plazas framed by 14th-century edifices, while on an adjacent hill stands a 1000-year-old castle.

Today we transfer to Lisbon. En route, we stop in the lovely seaside village of Nazaré.
Located in the central coast of Portugal, land of legends and traditions, sea and fishing, simple and hospitable people, Nazaré still retains the authenticity that inspired writers and dazzled artists.

Bairro Alto and Praça do Comércio
This first day’s walk in Lisbon will give a wide overview, not only of one of the most picturesque old quarters in the city but excellent views over all the rest.
The Bairro Alto is an old and picturesque neighbourhood in the centre of Lisbon, with narrow, cobbled streets, secular houses, small traditional shops, restaurants and nightlife venues.
Praça do Comércio, locally known as Terreiro do Paço, is a square in downtown Lisbon, located next to the river Tagus. The dramatic and imposing buildings frame one of the most beautiful and impressive city centres in Europe.

S. Jorge - Fado Museum
This walk descends one of the 7 hills of Lisbon from S. Jorge’s Castle through the Mouraria and Alfama neighbourhoods, the oldest in the city, down to the Fado Museum by the river’s edge.
The castle dominates the city, perched on the highest hill of the historic centre, giving visitors one of the most beautiful views of the city and the estuary of the river Tagus.

Jerónimos - Belém
The monuments we visit today go back to the golden age of Portuguese Discoveries, and to the magnificent creations that were built to celebrate that era.
The Jeronimos Monastery is a royal foundation that dates back to the late 15th century. This stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site will sweep you away with its majestic display of Manueline opulence portraying the wealth of the crown.
Further down river, the magnificent tower of Belém, built in 1520 as part of the Tagus estuary defence system, is one of the greatest symbols of Portugal’s Age of Discovery and World Heritage Site.

The Natural Park of Arrábida was founded in 1976 to protect the vegetation of the Mediterranean type native to this microclimate. The fauna is remarkably diverse. Strolling through this remarkable peninsula one may be lucky enough to observe the wild cat, the fox, the hare, the bat, Bonelli's eagle and the eagle owl, the partridge and the royal swift amongst others.
This visit will include a tour to Bacalhôa Palace, an old royal palace brimful of works of art both ancient and modern, a feast for the eyes. The estate is one of the best-known wine producers in Portugal. In this visit, we will taste the gorgeous wines.
